Abandoned in a crate and left on curb like garbage 12-week-old puppy making miraculous recovery

Admin

A 12-week-old puppy was found in a dog crate left on the side of the road like trash, less than a week ago in Youngstown, Ohio. The Mahoning County Dog Warden notified deputy Tara to pick him up and transport him to Med-Vet in Girard. At the time, the puppy’s temperature was only 74 degrees, and he was taking only four to five breaths a minute.

Veterinarians didn’t hold out much hope for the puppy they named Xavier; he had clearly been lying in his own feces for an unknown amount of time, had pressure sores with stains on his side and likely had been starved. Slowly the team were able to raise his temperature, hydrate him and began feeding the emaciated puppy small meals. Sadly however, his bloodwork showed he had been going into kidney failure due to the extended neglect.

Animal Charity of Ohio took over the responsibility of the puppy’s care.

Xavier is just a baby. Maybe 12 weeks old? His life so far looks like what I would imagine hell is like. Pure evil did this…there is no other explanation. He is a little miracle thanks to everyone’s prayers.

Two days later, Xavier was still hanging on, and his prognosis seemed brighter, but as in so many mysteries, life for the puppy took another serious turn. One day later, his life nearly ended again.

WE NEED A MIRACLE!!! He is declining! He can not regulate his body temperature outside of the incubator. The starvation and hypothermia were way too much for his little body. There is nothing else the medical staff can do for him. Please pray!

And then the prayers and well wishes seemed to have worked. Although Xavier was clearly not out of the woods, his health started to move in the right direction as his kidneys began to function. Veterinarians continued treatment with fluids and antibiotics. Soon another update followed:

She [veterinarian] seemed to be optimistic he has a better chance which is an improvement, praying for the little guy to keep fighting. Guys this one is really weighing heavy on our staff and on the staff of Mahoning County Dog Warden. It’s hard we can’t be with him right now. We know he is in great hands in Akron. Please please keep him in your thoughts and prayers.

And on Saturday, Xavier was released from the Akron Medvet to a medical foster.
