The Wyandotte Police Department teamed up with the Wyandotte Fire Department last week to save the life of a dog stranded on a floating ice chunk in the Detroit River.
The recently adopted Labradoodle named Lucy had been becoming accustomed to her new family, but this time it would seem Lucy wanted one last adventure before settling down. And so the rather rambunctious pooch ran away and jumped into a frozen river.
The police described the rescue:
A labradoodle had gotten away from its owner while on a walk and ended up jumping into the freezing cold Detroit River. The poor pooch somehow managed to climb onto a chunk of ice but it was drifting away in the river while the dog was freezing. Our team was able to move the ice close to the riverbank and our FD snagged the dog around its neck with a “catchpole”. The rescuer did this while standing on a slippery ladder that was submerged in the river while his coworkers held onto him via a rope. Truly an amazing and awesome rescue.

Lucy’s rescuer donned an orange insulated wetsuit and carefully waded into the freezing water until he could use his catchpole to bring her to safety.
She just had those big brown eyes and she couldn’t talk, but she probably was so grateful.
Wyandotte Assistant Fire Chief Rom Lyon to the Detroit Free Press
Lucky for Lucy, it had been a neighbor who had spotted her drifting on the ice floe and alerted 911 for help. Had it not been for the alert citizen, Lucy may not have been so lucky. And yes, she’s happy and healthy and surely glad to be out of the freezing river.
