Senior pup left to languish in shelter with severe head injury rescued in the nick of time

Admin

A 13-year-old pup found all alone with a severe head injury open wound and picked up by local animal control arrived at the Devore Animal Shelter in California last week. Because she was a stray, she was placed on a “stray hold” which prevented the dog from receiving the care she needed. When her hold was up after five days, the dog was listed to be euthanized at anytime.

The Saving Huey Foundation arrived at the shelter early in the morning to make sure there would be no confusion, and the dog was transported to the California Veterinarian Specialists for help.

Her name is now Rachel, and she is expected to survive. The disappointment in the care the shelter provided during the five days Rachel was in their care is disappointing.

I was fully prepared to swallow down some of the ways the shelter dealt with Rachel, however after seeing the level of infection around and in Rachel’s injury, I’m pissed. The outer bandage had obviously been changed as it was orange today, and blue on the day of her intake picture. Apparently however, the pad covering her injury and the cloth bandage covering the pad had not been changed over the past 5 days, as it had a huge amount of green, crusty infection dried to both. The pad had literally dried to her injury. Once the bandage was removed, her injury sat welled in green pus. The smell was nauseating.

The veterinarians believe Rachel now has a strong chance of survival once the infection is under control. She is currently on intravenous fluids and continues to receive pain medication and antibiotics. The doctors will debride the infected area, and she is expected to hospitalized for at least a week.

Rachel’s Sunday night update indicates her blood work looks good for an older dog even though her red blood count is still a bit low.

Rachel’s X-rays showed no skull fractures, which is huge as the doctors can move forward with debriding some of the necrotic tissue around her exposed skull. I believe that the first procedure will begin on Monday, when the surgical team is back in. Rachel seems to have very limited vision is her left eye, however the doctors aren’t sure if she might be able to retain some of that vision with optical treatment. Rachel has some serious dental issues going on, but for now we want to focus on the head wound. Once we get that taken care of, we will have her mouth addressed. Thankfully, Rachel did well under anesthesia yesterday, so future sessions won’t be as much of a concern as they could be in other cases.
