A four-month-old puppy recently rescued from the Caribbean had to be rescued again after plunging into the East River on Saturday to escape from an off-leash dog who attacked the dogs. A volunteer at the Animal Haven shelter had been walking BeeBee and two of his own dogs near the South Street Seaport when an off-leash dog rounded the corner and attacked his Rottweiler.
According to the New York Post, the puppy panicked, wiggled out of his leash and jumped into the river to just get away. The puppy was soon swept away by the currents and carried under Pier 17.
A bystander called out to the NYPD for help, and officers from the NYPD Emergency Service Unit responded and rescued the frightened little pup.
NYPD Special Ops@NYPDSpecialops· responded to a dog having a ruff morning. The pup had somehow gotten away from its owner & swam 200+ yards into the freezing cold E. River Our officers donned water rescue gear & swam to the scared puppy. He was safely returned to his owner uninjured. Great job!
BeeBee was rescued from the Island Of Antigua as a stray. The Animal Haven works with a group there to bring these strays back and find them loving homes. For more information how you can help or adopt one of their adorable dogs or cats waiting for homes, please click here.
Many thanks to our heroes from the NYPD for their outstanding work and compassion to our four-legged friends who need all of us to speak for them.
