In Brookings, Oregon, a puppy who was burned in a house fire has been adopted by one of the firefighters who immediately fell in love with him; the puppy will be trained to help teach children about fire safety.
According to the South Coast Humane Society, it had been about three weeks ago, where there was a house fire in Gardener Ridge that burned to the ground. A puppy had survived the fire, and his burns at first didn’t seem that serious. The entire family had been displaced from their home, as well as the puppy’s mother who had been a service dog. Fortunately, no humans were harmed.
The fire marshal carried the 16-pound puppy to the rescue organization, and when examined closely, a large portion of his back and other areas had been severely burned and “felt like plastic.”
The puppy, dubbed Smoky, needed a lot of intensive care including multiple cold baths, medications, salves, wound management and skin removal.
Weeks later, after Smoky’s injuries were healing, and the puppy was starting to feel more energetic, Chief Corey Bryant with the Greenacres Fire Protection District was called; he had already fallen in love with the puppy. Over the weekend, Smoky joined his new family.
And in spite of Smoky’s difficult start to life, the tiny survivor will be trained and be taken to the area schools with Chief Bryant to help teach children about house fires and how fire prevention.
