What began as a heartwarming rescue story has ended in devastating tragedy. Last week, a dog was rescued from the muddy bank of the Choctawhatchee River in Alabama. A kayaker had spotted the dog along the shore and as soon as the Troy Animal Rescue Project learned of the dire situation, a rescue plan was put into place.
The dog, dubbed River, was barely clinging to life when he was found – but hopes were high that he had been rescued in time.
But home and veterinary care weren’t enough to save River’s life. On Monday, the animal welfare agency updated Facebook followers about the dog’s passing, writing:
Our boy is at peace….River passed peacefully over rainbow bridge about thirty minutes ago. He had fought for so long and his body was tired…River deserved so much more than this life afforded him. But we know that for every moment for the last five days, he has been surrounded by love and prayer thanks to all of you.
Thanking those who took part in trying to save River’s life:
We want give a special thanks to the vets and care team at Carriage Hills Animal Hospital for providing him with love, comfort and the best care possible. We all wanted so bad for him to survive and this is a heartbreaking turn…Please keep his rescuers and Vetrinary care team in your prayers.
River will be cremated and the rescue group has stated that they will find a beautiful resting place for his ashes. Rest in peace River.
