A seven-month-old rescued German shepherd and Akita mix named Bailey, who ran away nearly a week ago, was captured on Sunday after he traveled multi-states starting with a swim in the East River, running through the tunnel in NYC and ending up at the Home Depot in New Jersey.
Bailey had been undergoing training out of his owner’s yard in Red Hook, Brooklyn when he escaped. When the dog was spotted swimming in the East River, a man had tried to save him, but Bailey wasn’t hearing of it and just kept on swimming away. The Good Samaritan was able to herd the dog back to shore where Bailey rested for hours. Later the traveling pooch set out again on his journey.
Everyone was looking for him, and Bailey’s trainer had already been plastering posters around, when someone notified her that the dog had been spotted near the opening of the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel entrance. Adam Isserlis had taken video of Bailey running through the tunnel and posted the odd scene on Twitter. A New York State Trooper trailed the dog surprising motorists who thought Bailey may have been a fox or a coyote.
Bailey scooted away and exited in Manhattan. When a call came in from Port Authority police that the dog had crossed state lines and was found in a Home Depot parking lot in Jersey City, Bailey’s traveling days were over. Bailey was trapped and netted outside on the second floor of the parking garage; he was safe..
He was turned over to Liberty Humane Society, and it is hoped he can be reunited with his owner.
For the most part, although a bit thinner, the spirited pooch was healthy except for an injury to his leg. Bailey really is a nice dog; he’s just shy and fearful of people, so he will need lots of patience and lots of love.
