On Tuesday, dozens of cats inside of a vehicle parked at a Minnesota rest area were rescued. On Wednesday, Animal Humane Society issued a release about the rescue effort:
Sweltering June heat and humidity. No home, no air conditioning. Living inside your car alongside your cats and unsure where to turn. This was the reality a community member faced yesterday when a concerned police officer knocked on their car window.
Thankfully, Animal Humane Society was there to help, removing 47 cats from the van and providing them with much-needed care.
According to ABC News, the cats belonged to a man who recently became homeless and he didn’t want to leave his pets behind. Animal Humane Society investigator Ashley Pudas said:
“Unfortunately, with the heat yesterday he recognized that it was above and beyond what he was capable of at this time. And he let us help them out,”
Pudas clarified that the man had not left his cats alone inside of the vehicle, and though the conditions inside were “unsanitary” the cats had only minor medical issues. According to the animal welfare agency, the man was evaluated by paramedics on site and provided with medical resources.
The cats will require ongoing care until they are adopted to new families. Donations for their care can be made to the animal welfare agency, who noted that a donor is matching funds up to $25,000:
Right now, your gift will be doubled, dollar-for-dollar, up to $25,000, thanks to an anonymous animal lover. It’s a match that couldn’t have come at a better time. Your generous gift will bring hope and healing to the animals and community members who need us most. Please give generously.
