No one knows how a dog found himself face to face with a gorilla in his enclosure at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park in Escondido, California last weekend. The nail biting situation was captured on camera by CbsNews.
Zookeepers had spotted two stray dogs in the park and while running around, one of the dogs entered the gorilla exhibit. Guests were shocked and called for zookeepers to rescue the dog. That’s when people started yelling at the gorilla to distract him from the frightened dog.
According to the San Diego Union Tribune, gorillas and other large animals at the park have been trained to respond to a bell that alerts them that a special treat is waiting in the back area.
The shepherd, whos name is Meatball is scheduled to be neutered before he is returned to his owner. His owners live about a mile from the zoo, and have promised to keep the dog safer and more secure.
The video quickly went viral as Meatball was being chased by one of the gorillas before the animals were all able to be separated. Fortunately the dog was safely removed by police, zoo staff and the San Diego Humane Society.
Welcome home Meatball. Be a good boy.
