Members of the Joshua Tree Search and Rescue Team (JOSAR) in California, rescued a 10-month-old puppy stuck on a ledge near Jumbo Rocks Campground after the dog had been missing when he ran away; probably due to beehive activity that scared him.
The dog’s owner, Christian Corona spent the next two days in the extreme heat trying to find his dog with no success.
According to the National Park Service, the park staff are advising visitors to leave their pets at home during this extremely hot summer weather as temperatures in the park and the rocky areas have registered anywhere from 90 to 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
It was Onyx, a young Doberman who had run off into the park in the evening of June 8 during a heat advisory which made his disappearance even more concerning. Fortunately, it had been days later when a team of park rangers and members of the JOSAR received a report of a dog trapped on a rock formation near Jumbo Rocks where Onyx had been staying.
rescue officials reached the dog and he barked, as if he was startled, but it didn’t take long to warm up to his rescuers…
Riverside County Department of Animal Services
Rescuers were able to coax the pup down offering the thirsty pooch water. It was the Riverside County Department of Animal Services who helped to reunite Onyx with his family after seeing a social media post about the missing dog.
Unfortunately, Onyx was not microchipped, which would have made the reunion much quicker. Corona was ecstatic when he was told his dog was found. He said Onyx had been leashed for most of the trip, but after sundown, he was given time to explore. We’re guessing – those days are over, and Onyx will be under his owner’s careful eye.
