Update on severely injured husky rescued by St. Louis rescue slowly improving but…

Admin

Photographs of an abandoned husky chained up in the woods with severe injuries near Ironton, Missouri, went viral on social media this week. A number of versions about the situation had been circulating including one story claiming the dog had been euthanized.

Saint Francois County Sheriff’s Department deputies were notified that a Good Samaritan had located the ailing dog at the Council Bluff’s Boat Dock. Stray Rescue of St. Louis were notified, and two volunteers immediately were dispatched to rescue the dog.

He was transferred to the organization’s partner veterinarian where he was examined, bathed and made to feel as comfortable as possible. Tumors in his mouth made eating painful for the dog, his rescuers named Songaa. Biopsies were ordered, but the dog’s prognosis was everything no one wanted to hear.

We have done several biopsies and spoken with some of the greatest oncologists there are. Sadly, this isn’t going to be the story we are all hoping, praying, and rooting for. He has an aggressive fibrosarcoma, a very extreme case at that, and no treatment plan is going to work for him, not even chemotherapy or radiation. It has already progressed and wreaked so much havoc that not even a partial jaw removal will do any good.

So, we’re going to give him the happiest days we can possibly give him. Tons of belly rubs, tiny bites of cheeseburger, and lots and lots of loving.

This is not at all what we hoped, but we thank God he is not on a chain in the heat all alone, or suffering and forgotten. He’s here with us, and he has all of you loving him so much, we know he feels it. As long as he stays in good spirits, we’re going to let him soak up as much love as there is. We’ll take it day by day, so whether it’s a day or a week, he’ll know he is adored, we promise.

For the time Songaa has left, he is being given anything and everything he wants. Today he visited the Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum so he could sniff everything. He loved every moment of his new adventure.

Be assured Songaa will be loved and spoiled. Check out his photos – today was a great day.
